2026 Convocation – First Lap

Momentous Beginning

Along with its Class of 2030, Ohio Wesleyan is celebrating its largest total enrollment in more than a decade and its largest back-to-back classes of more than 500 students in 14 years. The new Bishops moved in Aug. 20, when they also participated in a welcome-to-OWU convocation ceremony and took their ceremonial First Lap around campus.

At convocation, WCSA President Oyindoubra “Doubra” Akika ’27 offered helpful advice, Vice President for Enrollment Adam Smith shared fun facts about the new students, and President Matt vandenBerg told them:

“At OWU, we don’t tell you what to think. We teach you how to think for yourself. … We expect you to wonder. We expect you to try things, to change your mind, and to surprise yourself. Uncertainty isn’t something to eliminate before your education begins. Uncertainty is the raw material of greatness.”
