Boren Award-Winners

Jenna Chambers ’18 and Carly LoVullo ’16 are selected to receive competitive Boren Awards from the National Security Education Program. They will spend a year studying the native language and conducting research in Croatia and Tanzania, respectively.

Ahmed Hamed ’20 earns a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship through the U.S. Department of State. The Hilliard resident will spend six weeks participating in an Arabic Language study abroad program in North Africa.

Megaviruses and Microbiology

Delanie Baker ’19 earns an American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Undergraduate Research Fellowship to support summer research in Iceland, where she will explore megaviruses from diverse habitats. Baker is only the sixth OWU student to earn a national ASM award.

Medicine in Montevideo

Cara Harris ’18 spends a month at a hospital in Uruguay shadowing physicians in neurosurgery, internal medicine, anesthesiology, and general surgery. “It was the real-world exposure I needed to show me that my future in the medical field is a real one,” she says.

Jacquelynn Everetts ’18 visits Switzerland as part of The OWU Connection to explore L’Abri communities, where individuals are invited to seek answers to questions about God and the significance of life. She now works as a Coalition for Christian Outreach Fellow.

Tyler Iffland ’17 and Lee LeBoeuf ’17 are featured in the latest edition of “The Student Leadership Challenge: Five Practices for becoming an Exemplary Leader.” OWU’s Nancy Bihl Rutkowski uses the book each year for a noncredit class on leadership.
